It's a miracle we managed to pull this off, and we were even luckier than Peter Clark was there to capture the (one) rehearsal where we managed to have everyone together on the afternoon before the show. The mechanicals were being played by local Soho bar staff I worked with, the lovers and fairies by some Factory actors, and Georgina and the late, great Malcolm Tierney I had been serving drinks to at the French House when the plan began to be cooked up. Most of the Soho people and the Factory people didn't meet until the day.

The rehearsal pictures are all indoors, but in the actual event we moved the audience entirely dictated by the weather. The plan had been to do the whole thing outside, but it started raining, so we brought all the chairs in and began in Athens. However, just as the lovers and the mechanicals had decided to go to the wood, someone announced that it had stopped raining, so everyone picked up their chairs and went outside for the central part of the play. Just as it began to get too dark to see, it was time for the everyone to wake up and go back to Athens. Trygve had constructed a cardboard ass's head with a mouth that moved as he spoke - it was a beautiful thing and there were gasps as Puck destroyed it when she had no more use for it, stamping it into extinction.  Everyone picked up their chairs and hurricane lamps and went back inside, Bottom excitedly delivering his speech about how he was going to write Bottom's Dream as they all trundled past him. Then we finished the play with the play-within-the-play, and the reunited fairy king and queen got everyone in the hall up to dance and bless this place.
